The Upper River, Part 2
To 'Staging', a name drenched in evocations
Thanks so much to subscribers who converted from ‘free’ to ‘paid’ during by EOFY sale. I appreciate the investment you’ve made in me. A week or so back, I received an email from Substack telling me I’ve now totted up $1000 in sales which seems like an achievement of sorts I’m putting the money to the very necessary but scarcely rousing task of paying a portion of my Australian tax bill.
This is another mostly paywalled post, the second of three recounting a gothic journey up a lonely jungle river, me getting marooned up said river and meeting one of the world’s most remote communities of Bahai. It’s drawn from an unpublished book manuscript I wrote in 2019-2020 and I’ve included plenty of photos from the journey along with the words.
I’ve paywalled it because I’ve found that paywalling posts is the most dependable way of turning free subscribers into paid ones. And, as I try to make a living with writing, this is really the only feasible way to make this effort a going proposition.
An annual subscription works out at 5 USD per month, which as fellow grimly desperate for the money and querying what decisions they have made in life Substack writers observe is the equivalent of a cup and a half of coffee out and about, half a Big Mac meal or half a filled vegan baguette in my favourite Canberra eatery.
What you get for your subscription, as well as a warm glow
Subscriber only posts like this one and accesss to a subscriber-only chat
A quarterly video call (or coffee if you are in Canberra) so I can update you about my work
Early access to my writing projects
Now, paid subscribers, read on and find me half-way up the river when the ill-omened voyage still was going well…
